On January 20, 2015, my husband was involved in a car accident that
almost took his life. He had swerved into the left lane and a speeding
red Dodge truck hit him from behind. The impact from the hit was so
detrimental that it pushed him into the median
on the highway and flipped over at least three times. At the time, I
was at my cousins and he was on his way over for dinner. His dad knocked
on the door and there he was standing there just covered in blood. At
first, the only thing I could think of is what
the heck happened? I was in shock that he could even be standing! It
wasn't until when we got to the hospital that I broke down crying
because I could see just how damaging the crash was.
The airbags did not deploy in the car so he hit his nose on the
steering wheel and broke it. He also had multiple bruises on his legs
and arm and chest from the seat beat. There were scratches all over his
face and above his right eyelid. Both eyes were
bruised as well. He said that he was fine and wasn't in too much pain,
most of it was all in his nose and on his arm. As we were sitting there,
waiting on his mom to get there he started to feel it coming about a
little more and more.
They did a CT scan of his head, chest and arm just to make sure that
nothing was too seriously broken. For sure, we knew that he had a broken
nose. It was so crazy how swollen and big it was. When the doctor came
back, he said that there were multiple fractures
on the nose. Thankfully, nothing was moved out of place so they
recommended that we go see an Ears, Nose and Throat Specialist to get a
follow up and see what we needed to do after the swelling went down.
They also saw that he had a little tiny crack on his
skull, right were his neck and his spine met, they told us that there
is nothing to worry about from it, they would just like to monitor it.
Other than that, that said that his black eyes and bruises should all
heal up on his own. They gave us some prescription
medication for him and we ended up going home.
Flash forward to a week later, he goes in for his septoplasty which
basically realigns the nose and then he put some weirdo plugs in there
as well and gave him some pain medication to make everything better, but
they gave him such a low dosage that two days
later, we were in the hospital again because he almost OD'd from taking
the medication too often than prescribed. The doctor ended up giving
him a higher dosage as well as some anti-anxiety meds as well to calm
him down because the doctor that performed the
surgery did not tell him what they inserted into his nose. All day and
night he was able to feel it, not breathe, and had a little pain from
it. Because he didn't know what was in there, he was freaking out and it
just increased the pain and anxiety that he
was having on top of all the pain from the accident, it was just too
much for him.
A week later, it was time for him to get
the plugs taken out and man, those things were so HUGE! It was like an
eel looking shape with plastic tubes towards the front and it was like
8" long! He almost died when the doctor was getting those out, they were
in long enough that the skin almost started growing on it. Afterwards,
he said that he could breathe better than before so I guess it was all
worth it.
The meaning of this story is make sure that
you are not recklessly driving, driving under the influence and just to
look because you don't want something like this to happen to you. It was
not a pleasant experience very stressful for both him and me. A lot of
money out-of-pocket, and now we are out of a car since it was completely
totaled and we only had liability insurance since the car was paid off.
Here are some pictures of my car so you can see the damage.
What are your scary experiences while driving? Have you been in an accident before? Let me know in the comments below!
